From Conflict to Vibrancy: What Northern Ireland’s Journey Can Teach Us About Reimagining Our Own Lives
Belfast, November 2024.
I took a “cruise” up to the capital city of Northern Ireland this past weekend. My goal was to explore the iconic Belfast Murals.
This “wall art” captures the history of Northern Ireland and the deep, often painful sectarian divide- the Troubles, the civil war that took place in this part of the world.
The Troubles lasted 30 years. Over 3600 people died as a result of the violence.
I lived and worked here for part of this time.
Today Northern Ireland has a completely different atmosphere. Belfast is a vibrant international city. It is inviting, it is exciting- the weather, well I pass on that subject.
And so, on a larger scale, this transformation reveals the power of change. What is possible when people rally around and decide there is a different way to live their lives. Doors open, old ones close. Possibilities become realities.
Is this possible on an individual scale? YES. For it was the individuals in the case of Northern Ireland that created the whole. It involved a shift in thinking, doing and feeling. It took action by all involved but it was possible.
Change, shift, re-Imagining your life is absolutely possible. It starts with one decision and from their the groundwork is laid, the work begins.
