How One Festival in Denia Taught Me the True Meaning of Belonging

During my trip to Spain, I experienced a local holiday in Denia called the Festival of Lights. The streets were lined with candles, creating an unusual atmosphere from the start. As the day progressed, these candles were lit, and the streets quickly filled with people.

I was fortunate enough to participate in lighting the candles, despite being a tourist who didn’t speak the language. The locals were welcoming, helping me join in the tradition without making me feel like an outsider. It was a genuine moment of connection, showing how shared experiences can bridge cultural gaps.

At the center of the town, a square hosted a piano surrounded by candlelight. As evening set in, classical music played, adding another layer to the already atmospheric scene. What struck me most was the sense of community – everyone was enjoying the moment together, regardless of their background.

This experience taught me something important about travel: sometimes, the most meaningful connections happen when you’re willing to simply participate and be present.
