I recently had the following question posed to me from a subscriber on my YouTube channel.
How do you keep your mind free of the clutter of thoughts from the past, that is to say how to stop ruminating about things you may feel regretful or guilty about from the past? How do you focus your mind on the present moment and perhaps plan for the future?
I can tell you that this is something that I have dealt with and if I am honest there are times that I still deal with. There are probably many other woman that can attest to this also, it is sort of like there is a nasty person, or as I call it, my gremlin whispering in my ear
She is the one that really throws me off balance.
She whispers in my ear:
- You should have done this
- Why did you do that
- That was a stupid decision
- You turned left when you should have turned right
- What were you thinking about [ when you got involved with that person ]
She really is extremely annoying.
Here is how I deal with her:
- I acknowledge her.
- I say ” Yes I can hear you”
- And you are entitled to your opinion.
- I appreciate your input
But for now
- Go away
- I have my own life to lead
- You are cramping my style
Along with this technique I have learned that there are things that you and I cannot change. We have to accept feeling guilt or bad about a past experience or decision. Mulling over past experiences just takes up time and goodness we all know, as the years past by [ and wow do they seem to fly by] there are somethings that we cannot change or alter. They are a part of our history. They make us who we are today.
I am reminded of the Serenity prayer that reads like this:
Grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed; courage to change that which can be changed, and wisdom to know one from the other.
I answer this question and others on my YouTube channel.
